Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

The most important role for a Trustee is to be that person that picks up the phone or answers emails to assist parents with their concerns, move policies that enhance learning and to ensure the Board is being managed by our staff. I have been elected Vice Chair and Chair of the Board of Trustees along with Chair of Student Achievement, sat on the Labour Relations, the Audit and the Ukrainian Canadian Advisory Committees

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

All students have a right to attend our schools without fear of bullying or harassment. At TCDSB, I moved motions to expand our Board wide Code of Conduct so that it aligned with the Ontario Human Rights Code and I was a leader in the movement to acknowledge Pride Month, fly the Pride flag at all schools and admin buildings and provide resources to educators in support of our acceptance of all students and staff. Students deserve a safe learning environment

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

I have spoken out publicly that the government must reduce class sizes so that students and teachers can achieve excellence in learning the curriculum. The government must acknowledge that over subscribed classrooms do not fascilitate proper learning environments. In working with our Union partners, I will advocate for smaller class sizes

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

TCDSB is underfunded for the services we deliver to Special Ed students. The EAs that work with these students are burning out and students cannot attend classes because of a desperate lack of resources. This is fundamentally unfair to our most vulnerable learners. I support the International Language Programs offered at TCDSB. Learning language is a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with their heritage. In Ward 2 I instituted the "Ward 2 Emerging Young Artist Competition" where students from K -12 submitted their art and music work
