Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

As a mother of three boys in the system, I know how much it matters when children get the support they need at school. Since 2018, I’ve secured millions for school improvements, protected MEDD classes, prioritized psychoeducational assessments and safety, expanded IB and skilled-trades opportunities, built university partnerships, and created TCDSB’s only High Performance Athletic Program. I’ve strengthened the home-school-church partnership. My priority remains student achievement & academic excellence and memories to last a lifetime.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

Bullying isn’t solved with slogans. When a family raises a concern, they deserve to be heard, kept informed and told what happens next. I helped shape TCDSB’s anti-bullying policy through the largest stakeholder outreach ever undertaken for a Board policy as a member of GAP. As trustee, I would push for the policy to be followed, teachers to have clear guidance and support, and concerns to receive prompt, fair follow-up that stops the harm. Students and staff deserve a safe, respectful school.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

Students aren’t numbers on a spreadsheet. Staffing and class-size decisions should reflect what’s happening in classrooms and what families and educators say students need. I’ve prioritized special-education programs and worked to reduce psychoeducational-assessment wait times at the TCDSB. As trustee, I’ll continue pressing the Board to explain how staff are assigned, for the teachers and EAs students need, and advocate for provincial funding that supports inclusive schools, timely help and programs close to home.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

Specialized programs should reflect students’ strengths, interests and needs and lead to real opportunities. Working together, we expanded IB at St. Basil, created TCDSB’s first and only High-Performance Athletic Program at JCM, secured $1.5 million for JCM’s new Culinary and Hospitality program, introduced YAAACE, and built York University and Seneca partnerships. Next, we will expand OYAP and skilled trades, protect local special-education programs, and keep building strong academic, athletic, arts and career pathways right here in Ward 3.
