Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

As a board Trustee, we work collectively as a team. Our responsibility includes: setting goals, priorities, which focuses on strategic direction for the welfare of the school. We approve board policies and by-laws that guide school operations, equity initiatives, and programs. We also appoint, evaluate and supervise the Director of Education. My strengths are as a classroom teacher at the Secondary level of 25 years is extremely important, and crucial as a Trustee. I am confident in Education and am familiar with levels of education.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

School boards operate under strict Trustee Codes of Conduct that explicitly prohibit any form of bullying or discrimination. Parents' and communities play a vital role in contacting their Trustee, to issue complaints regarding bullying, discrimination, harassment, malicious injury of staff or students' reputations. I support parents and community to actively engage in supporting the students and staff to create a safe supportive environment for learning.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

A school board trustee has no individual power to assign teachers, hire staff, or set specific class sizes. The Trustee works together as a board to handle high-level governance, budgeting and policies. My priorities would be to budget and identify the conditions of the school, and classrooms regarding facilities, programs and communicate with staff. When we communicate with staff and parents' we could work together to solve class size and teaching solutions.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

Trustees will assist in making high- level governance and policy decisions about the range distributing funds. A Board Trustee will engage in negotiating with policy decisions regarding the allocation of funding towards the specialized programs. This being said, they do not allocate funds for day to day procedures or placement for individual students. My priority is the involvement of parents, students and the community,
