Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

As a school board trustee, I will focus on policies that ensure reasonable classroom sizes because this issue cascades into other issues. Increasing class sizes has not led to hiring more support staff, yet funds are being cut and educators are being let go. Teachers are told to do more with less, leaving our children to carry the burden. As a policy analyst, I will help develop policies that ensure our children receive the top-tier education they deserve and advocate for adequate funding for our education system.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

As School Board Trustees, we are responsible for establishing and enacting policies that ensure a safe learning environment for our children. Bullying affects us all: children, parents, teachers, and the community. If elected, I will work to expand efforts to end bullying and harassment in schools by reviewing our current strategy for addressing bullying and expanding our cyberbullying policies. Given advances in AI, bullying will likely evolve, and we should be ready.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

I would advocate for our children's best interests and push back against the province's policy of cutting funds to our public school system. Underfunding classrooms, staffing cuts, and ballooning class sizes all harm our children's educational performance. Teachers' hands are already full and they are expected to do more with limited funds and resources. If elected, my two main priorities are to fight for class size caps and ensure the student-to-educator ratio allows each student to be seen and heard.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

No child should feel left behind or believe the public school system has failed them. These programs should continue. Cutting them will only harm students. As a Trustee, I would allocate funding to special education classrooms and ensure students receive the support they need. I would develop policies to quickly identify students in need, which would also ease the strain on teachers. Amid recent threats to Canadian culture, I would advocate for fair funding for arts and French Immersion programs, as both are part of our identity.
