Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen? If elected as a school board trustee, my priority will be improving student achievement and ensuring every student has the support and opportunity to succeed. I will use achievement and equity data to identify gaps, understand what is working, and advocate for effective strategies and resources. I will apply my policy experience to set clear goals and monitor results, while listening to diverse perspectives. By combining evidence with community input, I will help turn good ideas into practical action that improves outcomes for all students.
A school board trustee should act as a governance and policy leader, ensuring robust anti-discrimination frameworks and holding the administration accountable for student safety. I would support clear, consistently enforced policies for reporting and responding to bullying and discrimination, along with prevention through staff training and mental health resources. I would also listen to students, families, and staff and use data to identify gaps, monitor outcomes, and ensure policies translate into meaningful action in schools.
My role in addressing concerns about staffing levels and class sizes would be to act as a strategic overseer, community advocate and responsible fiscal manager. Trustees set direction, advocate for resources, and ensure accountability, while daily operations and staffing are handled by the Director of Education and superintendent. My priorities are aligning resources with student needs, using data to identify staffing pressures, advocating for EA support, and holding administration accountable for outcomes.
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed? My priorities are equity, transparency and decentralization to ensure specialized programs are fairly distributed and accessible. Trustees shape board policy, budgets and boundaries rather than managing schools day-to-day. During the annual budget process, I would advocate for creating or expanding a flexible reserve to respond to emerging needs for specialized programs. Data and community input would guide my efforts to identify gaps, support sustainable program delivery and ensure resources are directed where they are most needed.
