Issue answers
Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?Building and supporting parent and student councils. As co-chair of a parent council I know how important we are to the school and the students. A strong school community helps the students get what they need for a strong education. The voices of parents, teachers and students help shape a better, positive environment. I would host more town halls to give everyone the chance to express their communities educational needs and take the information back to the board.
I would help bring in resources to address these issues, our teachers are already stretched thin, and even they can be the victim of bullying. I have worked with Brave Education which is a fabulous group that goes to schools and teaches prevention with talks designed for students and even for teachers.
This is a tough issue to tackle, some schools are at 110% capacity with no extra classrooms to thin out the class size School principals do a incredible job of trying to fit all the students enrolled into the school I would advocate the province for a higher budget to get more EA's or teachers into schools that are over capacity. Especially when the school-teacher allocation is given to principals in May and does not account for new students during the summer that have enrolled in the school, or even first day students that forgot to register
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed? The most important aspect is we don't lose these programs to budget cuts. I would have meaningful community engagement in how the programs are offered. I would work to make sure parents and students know if they are interested, the criteria the student needs to meet. I would encourage and promote students to attend the open house events. Working with the students to also have a prep event that can prepare them for the application process.
