Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

Protecting frontline classroom resources and special education by reducing administrative overhead and pushing Queen's Park to modernize outdated funding models. Backed by extensive experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets, I will audit TDSB expenditures to keep funding directed toward teachers and educational assistants. Combed with a proven record of aligning complex stakeholder teams, I bring the governance skills needed to work with fellow trustees. As a local parent, my focus is practical student outcomes, not bureaucracy.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

The short answer is advocacy, transparency and communication. Bullying has always and will likely continue to be an unfortunate part of growing up and we should all be made aware of the tools at our disposal to address it when it rears its head. Ensuring that instances of bullying are surfaced with the right people, and communicating with the communities to make sure that they are aware of the support mechanisms in place at their disposal to address these instances when the do arise.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

First and foremost, I would work to protect funding for special education needs and EA's to assist with chronic daily shortages, and potentially improve retention. I would work to cap outlier class sizes to ensure that intermediate and secondary classes don't balloon past reasonable sizes to fit the board-wide average. Finally, work toward minimizing fall re-organizing, by improving spring enrolment forecasting to reduce thrashing in class rooms and teacher assignment.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

I would work to direct funding toward EA staffing and professional supports to ensure that students with Intensive Support Programs and Individual Education plans are able to fulfill their needs within their home school and not need to bus out of area for assistance. I would work to review the board’s student transportation policy ensuring families that rely on transit are accepted into regional specialized programs have viable transit support.
