Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

If it were up to me I would choose but I CANT.We are inhibited by the large elephant in the room. The chronic financial crisis/budget deficit. It's a binding constraint that not one of us can avoid .Every available resource is already completely consumed. Collective responsibility has caused an appalling breakdown of fiduciary tradition. Consequentially, my number one priority, should be trying to get back in leaner territory. My background is Sociology. It's not Math but I understand human behavior and structures and how to leverage help

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

As a Trustee Bullying and Discrimination are a little more indirect and constrained because we are somewhat on the outside administratively looking in. A Trustee gets there consequentially. The harm has already been done. However, preemptively, there is an important role for a good Trustee to play. I would collaborate to bring organizational conduct and parental protection, find a degree of conformity. My action would be to incentivize children to cooperate not always compete.Harm is personal, resolution should be. No one size fits all solutions.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

Communities have a natural right to be concerned about these issues. Teachers and EA's are a network of people with specialized knowledge, if that resource is diminished then we are altogether, in Perverse Incentive territory, where,"when a reward or penalty is tied directly to a metric, people unwittingly change their behavior to maximize that specific target and this in turn destroys the ultimate purpose. As a Trustee,I would take the position that we should not pawn our human resources .My priority would be to get indifferent people on board

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

It's not about me.However,I realize that, Specialized education and language programs are very sensitive issues, when you attempt to make some happier, it inadvertently comes at the expense of the unhappiness of others. Therefore, with the power I am lent, I would only put my proverbial thumb on the scale, if the programs suggested may be crossing a harmful boundary. If such programs are proven helpful, then and only then, will I lend my support unequivocally for the greater good, which is always, towards a well rounded education for our children
