Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

The most important thing is to be available to parents in Etobicoke and help them get answers from the board. I live in this community, so I understand local school concerns. I am not a politician. My strength is that I will listen, speak plainly, and follow up. A trustee should make the system easier for families, not more confusing.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

A trustee should listen to parents and students, and make sure concerns are taken seriously. I would support clear anti-bullying rules, faster help when a child is being hurt, and better communication between families and the school. A trustee cannot run the classroom, but can ask the board to check if the process works and help families find the right person. Every student should feel safe at school.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

I would listen to parents and teachers about crowded classrooms and missing support staff. My priority is that students get enough help in class, especially those who need extra support. A trustee does not hire teachers, but can ask the board to be clear about staffing and class sizes in each school. I would support using money first for classrooms, not extra office work.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

I would prioritize fair access. Special education, language programs, and arts should be available to students who need them, not only to families who already know the system. A trustee should help parents understand how to apply and why a decision was made. I would ask the board to keep these programs in local schools where possible, so children in Etobicoke do not have to travel far.
