Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

While I have a comprehensive policy platform, the most important action I'll take as Trustee is being present and accessible in the community - answering questions, addressing concerns, and organizing for positive change. With years of experience in board governance, a passion for community service, and a proven record of bringing people together to get big things done, I don't need to learn on the job; I'm ready to get to work for Etobicoke families on day one. We deserve a voice - as Trustee, I'll ensure we have one that can't be ignored.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

Trustees and all elected representatives first need to lead by example, treating each other and constituents with respect, dignity, and patience. I commit to this. In addition, I support policies to tackle systemic inequities and build a school culture that centers core Canadian values of inclusivity, kindness, and collaboration alongside world-class academic achievement. Finally, we must ensure that school staff have the time and resources to give students the attention and support they need.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

Ultimately, the province controls the purse strings & has made the decision to chronically underfund education while suspending the statutory powers of Trustees. The province may be legally allowed to take away statutory powers, but nobody can take away the power of people to organize and effect change. I've led & won campaigns that have secured new funding and policy concessions from every level of government. I'll put my experience to work organizing and empowering Etobicoke families to demand - and win - proper resourcing of our schools.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

Toronto is a world-class city, and our children deserve world-class schools that allow them to pursue their education to the greatest extent their talents and inclinations allow. Conflict over access to specialized courses - especially in critical fields like the arts, which contribute billions to the Ontario economy - are a signal that demand is outstripping supply. We have a choice: we can arbitrarily ration access, or we can meet the demand and create the conditions for every child to achieve their full potential. I know what I choose.
