Issue answers
Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen? With my experience as a parent, school volunteer and lawyer, my priority is to end the Supervision of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). In 2025, following financial investigations, the provincial government placed the TDSB under Supervision and suspended trustee responsibilities. For context, I was not a Trustee then. This would be my first initiative because everything else depends on the Trustee role resumption. The community needs a voice at the TDSB.
A Trustee must proactively address bullying and discrimination. Beginning with setting fair policies and procedures, this must be followed with review periods. Preventative steps are important, such as developing problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Ensuring basic needs are met can help. Keeping students active and engaged through access to libraries, youth programs and mentorship opportunities allows students to build confidence. When students develop friendships and discover their talents, problem behaviour is less likely.
Smaller class sizes facilitate learning because of individualised attention and greater feedback. I support smaller class sizes and ensuring sufficient educational assistants to give students additional support and access to resources. I believe that School Board Trustees should do their best to coordinate and advocate for smaller class sizes. During my election campaign, this is the concern I have heard most about from students, parents and educators. It should, therefore, be prioritized once Trustee responsibilities resume.
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?Special education is required by legislation, and must be available. Provided there is demand for specialized programs, such as Arts, Leadership, Math and Science, they should continue. Surveys would help obtain data for program improvements. For program admission, previous Trustees voted for a lottery system, which was reversed to merit-based by the Province. Equitable program access is part of a larger social discussion. I support ways to "level the playing field" outside the lottery system.
