Candidate for School Board Trustee
Daniel Choi
Toronto District School Board Ward 3
Issue answers
Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?Restoring your vote comes first. A person nobody elected now holds this board’s powers. Parents can’t vote him out. That should bother every parent in this ward. Every three months I’ll publish a plain report on what he decided and what it cost. If he won’t release a number, I’ll publish the refusal instead. Our schools’ real figures go to Queen’s Park, not more resolutions. I sit on multiple boards and oversight is already my work. First report published inside 90 days.
Call me, and someone will actually follow up. Too many families report bullying and then hear nothing for weeks. I’ll find who holds your child’s file and stay on it until you get an answer in writing. I’ll also tell you honestly when it isn’t the answer you wanted. I was a peer supporter for two years. Mostly listening, then making sure the right person moved. Deciding discipline isn’t a trustee’s job. Making sure nobody gets ignored is. Two business days to reply, every time.
I won’t promise smaller classes. Trustees don’t set class sizes and they don’t do the hiring. The province writes those rules and sends the money. Pretending otherwise just wastes your vote. Here’s what’s real. Twice a year I’ll ask in public for staffing and support numbers at every school here. Then I’ll publish what comes back, gaps included. I’ll take them school by school to the people who decide. Reading budgets and data is my day job. First full set published by June 2027.
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?Admissions to specialized programs changed last year. One appointed person made that call. Elected trustees had voted seventeen to three the other way, and no parent was asked. Whatever you think of the old rules, that isn’t how it should be decided. Portfolios and audition videos cost money many families don’t have. I’ll press for free application help before the next deadline. I advocated for equity in law school. Each year I’ll publish how many ward children applied and got in.
