Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

As a trustee, my priority would be keeping schools focused on education: strong fundamentals, critical thinking and preparing students for their future. I believe schools should provide a safe, respectful environment where students can learn, while parents should have the primary role in raising their children and making decisions about their family’s values. I would work with the province and parents to keep the focus where it belongs: putting students first.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

No child should have to feel unsafe, isolated or targeted at school. I believe bullying requires a multi-pronged approach, including prevention, early intervention and accountability. One program I would like to bring back and promote is Olympic wrestling. Wrestling builds confidence, discipline, resilience, humility and respect for others. I have zero tolerance for bullying and will not turn a blind eye when a child needs to feel safe and supported.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

If there is one change we could make that would have a significant impact on students’ learning potential and the overall well-being of teachers, it would be reducing class sizes. Pay increases, school renovations and other investments are important, but they cannot provide a child with the same day-to-day benefit as having more individual attention from their teacher. Smaller classes mean fewer distractions, more opportunities for students to ask questions, and a calmer learning environment. It is a no-brainer

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

SSpecialized programs can be incredibly valuable and, for some students, can be just as impactfupecialized programs can be incredibly valuable and, for some students, can be just as impactful as the traditional curriculum. We need to ensure these programs are high quality, accessible to students, and led by people who are passionate and qualified. We also need to regularly evaluate their effectiveness. When a program is no longer meeting students’ needs, we should have the courage to make changes or move on, creating room for new opportunities.
