Issue answers
Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?I am committed to delivering strong public education for every child, working in collaboration with parents, educators, the Ministry of Education, and the City of Toronto. My priorities include ensuring equitable access to programs and opportunities, empowering every student to reach their full potential. I will advocate for appropriate staffing and funding, inclusive schools and classrooms, the specialized supports students need to succeed, and direct resources toward mental health supports, safe classrooms free from hate, and school repairs.
Trustees must listen to the concerns of parents and help them address issues through existing protocols. The Board has a Caring and Safe Schools Policy (P051) approved by the Board of Trustees and a Bullying Prevention and Intervention Procedure (PR703) that speaks to the responsibility of principals as leaders in their schools to help their communities understand that these policies exist and how the school will ensure it is a safe place for all students, staff and families.
The TDSB like all Boards are funded by the province, which provides funding for teachers based on system wide-averages for class size and funding for EAs based on the Special Education Grant. I voted to cap class sizes in grades 4-8, which brought the TDSB under the provincial average but unfortunately that decision was overturned by the Supervisor. As a teacher, I have consistently advocated for smaller class sizes and Education Assistants to support students in schools and I will continue to advocate for funding to do so.
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed? My priority is to continue to offer specialized programming for students across the system. I will work to ensure there are located in places that are accessible to all students, and support learning opportunities for all students to explore their interests and get the support they require.
