Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

I'm here to keep the balance between public and private models, as a lefty who teaches in both models, amid an attempted corporate takeover of schools by Doug Ford, who's fired half of trustees, more than halved their pay, and installed literal CEOs to overrule the people's elected representatives. This must be stopped and I have signed Trustee Rizzo's pledge to work with The Catholic Board to resist these two parallel takeovers of public education. Work with small businesses and KEEP PUBLIC SCHOOLS PUBLIC -- the people must be in charge.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

I wrote about this last time in "Proxy Peace" on Substack, and this time voters wrote me first about antisemitism in schools. I've since attended the so-called antisemitism debate the mayor skipped, and pushed for inter-faith dialogue, both in the school board and in the broader community, in "What I told Toronto Faiths", also available on Substack. I've cited the known statistics that Blacks and Jews are the top two targets of hate in Toronto. Harsher disciplinary measures must coexist with dialogue--mere dialogue is victim-blaming.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

Class Sizes must go down -- this must be the primary metric by which new spending is evaluated: its affect on student-teacher ratio, or at least upon student-adult-ratio, in the case of hiring support staff rather than teachers. This bans at the same time hiring of new bureaucrats who do no real educational work directly with students, as they do not count towards the student-adult ratio. Reducing class sizes has been a cornerstone of my campaign platform both this time and last time. See my complete platform on Substack.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

FUND THE ARTS has long been a cornerstone of all my campaigns, including for council, MP, and school board last time -- I am also a CODING and PIANO teacher and believe coding classes are a huge force multiplier for the arts, including computer music, graphic arts, game design, and storytelling. I will revamp the entire Ontario Coding Curriculum based on my open curriculum "The Goldingcode Curriculum" which I have already recommended to the Province in "What I Told Paul Calandra" on Substack.
