Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

As your next TDSB Trustee in Ward 7, the most important thing for me will be putting our children's education first. This means repealing Bill 101, falsely titled as "Putting Student Achievement First Act." This bill is a major mistake. I will use all my powers as your TDSB Trustee to make sure the province reverses these policies. These cuts harm our children, our schools, teachers, and staff at the TDSB. Now is not the time to make cuts to public education. I will keep partisan politics and ideology out of our classrooms and the TDSB.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

While bullying and discrimination have no place at the TDSB, unfortunately, it's a reality that we as parents have to confront from time to time. The most important factor with bullying and discrimination is that it has to be addressed right away. As Trustees, our role will be to rely on the Caring & Safe Schools framework to create the best policies to prevent, mitigate, and address these issues. Trustees need to foster an environment where everyone in our schools feels safe, accepted, and welcome.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

I'm running for TDSB Trustee in Ward 7 to address this exact issue: class sizes & staffing. Under Bill 101, class sizes have increased across the TDSB making it difficult for teachers to give students the attention they deserve and classes are becoming over-crowded. $6.5 billion in funding is being cut by a provincial government that isn't prioritizing our children's education or staffing issues. As your next TDSB Trustee, I will do everything in my power to ensure the provincial government is held accountable and reverses these policies.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

Special programs are important to many families in Ward 7 (University-Rosedale, Toronto-St.Paul, and Toronto-Centre). They give students the attention they need according to their unique attributes. As your TDSB Trustee, I will ensure these programs not only continue, but will advocate that access is increased (i.e. TOPS on Bloor). Investment must be made in International Baccalaureate (IB) and Leadership programs. These programs are all under scrutiny and I have the practical experience to stand up to Doug Ford, Paul Calandra, and Rohit Gupta.
