Trustees, the Board, and the Province
What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen? The preservation of our school board trustees, and, in turn, public education, is in a critical space and under real threat that I’m not sure the general public understands. Losing our role would mean losing public & community voice, and I believe we must all stand together, across the political spectrum, to support school board trustees and a high-quality, well-resourced public education system. This is one of the primary reasons I am running in this election. My children's educational future suffers without school board trustees.
Bullying and discrimination have no place in our schools or communities. Trustees are public voices, and we must strive to ensure our learning spaces and school environments are positive places where diverse friendships can form and students can spend time together. Proper resources are critical to success. For example, the larger the classroom sizes are allowed to get, the harder it is to maintain healthy learning environments. Advocacy for healthy school resources is one way we can use our roles to help combat bullying and discrimination.
Many community members I have spoken to in Ward 9 throughout this campaign want classroom sizes capped and are not happy with the increase, especially with all the development across Toronto. Addressing rising classroom sizes has many positive benefits, including safety and more time per student. If we are serious about high-quality education, resourcing must match that commitment. Student enrolment losses will hurt public education, and we have seen enrolment losses rise.
Special Programs and Program Access
School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?Special education resources are a massive gap in the current education system that we must address immediately. Our goal should be to ensure all students have access to programs, resources, and opportunities. I also believe that, for this to happen sustainably over the long term, we must be properly resourced, and that’s not where we are now. Trustees must continue to advocate for a healthy & funded public education system if we truly hope to achieve our goals.
