Candidate for School Board Trustee

Sonny Yeung

Toronto District School Board Ward 9

Issue answers

Trustees, the Board, and the Province

What's the most important thing you'd act on as a school board trustee, and what experience or strengths would help you make it happen?

Strengthen Academic Achievement! My opponent's #1 priority- Skill Trades. Where 13% are on path to it. Where 33% are considering. I am reaching out to the 67% that is pursuing higher education at University OR College. I have always attended a Public School from JK to then OAC. Got 80s & was accepted by all Universities in Toronto as well as George Brown for Business, Psychology & some Filler, Centennial College for Business & Psychology. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree & Minor in Finance. I would be a living example of graduate.

Bullying in Schools

Bullying and discrimination are concerns raised in many school communities. What role do you believe a School Board Trustee should play in addressing these issues, and what actions would you support?

Update Board Policies! When I was a child I was bullied called a "chink" my feelings were hurt but I was stubborn and thought "I will show you" I was on the honour roll and got to go to a University of my choice. I would try to de-escalate the situation and if necessary call the police. The worst case scenario is Tumbler Ridge; where they had to demolish the school. Chat GPT has given advice on suicide and how to shoot up a school and the Board will try to develop a policy dealing with Big Tech and AI.

Class Sizes and Staffing

Some school communities have raised concerns about teacher and educational-assistant (EA) staffing levels and class sizes. What role would you take as a School Board Trustee in addressing these concerns, and what would your priorities be?

The TDSB has a $3.5 Billion Budget and about 580 schools. The Education funding formula been underfunded $900 Million a year from 2018-2026 that equals $7.5 Billion over 8 years and 3 months of the Doug Ford Conservatives. Recruitment peaked in 2015. I would be for smaller classes and greater staffing of teachers and educational - assistants. There will be a strike vote in November and given the Education Minister is a partisan Conservative, the negotiations may be in Public.

Special Programs and Program Access

School boards make decisions about the range and distribution of specialized programs, including special education, language programs, and arts programming. What would you prioritize as a School Board Trustee in how these programs are offered and accessed?

School boards make funding decisions! I would prioritize 1. Special Education 2. Language Programs then 3. Arts There is a five year wait for Autism funding under the Doug Ford Conservatives. In addition I would promote Science (S) Technology (T) Engineering (E) Mathematics (M) learning. As well as Financial Literacy.
