Issue answers
My priorities are the same as when I was elected four years ago: delivering for Davenport. That means new parks like the Green Line and improved green spaces with renovated playgrounds and splash pads. It means safer streets for all road users through neighbourhood traffic safety plans and road changes. It means faster public transit, including improved bus and streetcar service. And it means good jobs and real community benefits for Davenport, like the work I've led in the City's first Inclusive Economic Development Plan.
Increasing affordable housing and tackling homelessness have been top priorities for me. I've gotten affordable homes built across Davenport and leveraged City land to support non-profits and land trusts. I'll continue to deliver by creating 65,000 new, rent-controlled homes by 2030. I also led City Council's response to homelessness, which saw it drop by 8.2% in Toronto while it increased across Ontario. Outdoor encampments also declined by two-thirds due to our outreach-driven approach. I also fought for renters with our Renovictions bylaw.
Affordability is the most urgent issue facing Torontonians today. I've fought to keep TTC fares affordable with no increases for three years, while investing in repairs to our transit system. I championed the new fare capping program to save transit riders money. I supported expanding the School Nutrition Program, and opening all library branches 7 days a week. I'll continue taking on corporations when it comes to grocery prices and hidden fees. And I'll keep scaling up Toronto's investment in community-owned housing that stays affordable.
When people have more services, they are and feel more safe. We’ve made good progress on emergency response times by hiring more 911 operators, firefighters and paramedics, and 911 wait times have dropped by 90%. I’ve fought to increase the Toronto Community Crisis Service to our subway system. This service means people in crisis get support and disturbances are handled quickly and successfully. Supporting young people is critical to safety. Our Youth Safety Plan created 16,000 new jobs for youth, and I'll keep working with community leaders.
Over the past four years, I led more neighbourhood traffic safety plans and road improvements in Davenport than in any other part of the city. This includes road re-designs, intersection changes, and speed humps to make our streets safer for everyone. I spoke out with families against Premier Ford's removal of automated speed cameras. In my role on the TTC Board, I’ve increased TTC service on key routes in Davenport and city-wide. I’ve also supported improvements like transit signal priority that can have a big impact on speeding up our system.
Confronting Hateful and Hostile Behaviour
Many Torontonians are concerned about hateful and hostile behaviour, which can disproportionately affect newcomers and members of racialized, marginalized, and equity-deserving communities. What would you prioritize on the next City Council to respond and keep Toronto safe and welcoming for everyone?Hateful behaviour is unacceptable in Davenport and across Toronto. I have championed the Toronto For All public campaign combating public hate and discrimination. I supported new funding for 14 community-led grant projects tackling systematic racism, antisemitism, and discrimination against immigrants, and fostering community growth and belonging. Throughout my career, I have worked with community groups and non-profits fighting hate and advocating for the rights of marginalized people in our city, and will continue this critical work.
